It's hard to believe my six years in the Holy Child are now coming to an end. Sport has been a big part of my years in the school and my position as sports captain this year is one I have thoroughly enjoyed. I have been involved with many sports in the school like football, basketball, badminton and every year I participated in athletics at Santry.

Since 1st year I have always looked up to the sports captain and always said “ one day that will be me “. When Mrs.Johnstone offered me the position at the end of 5th year I couldn’t have been happier. I looked forward to the challenge and only hoped I could be as successful as the rest.

As sports captain I had a lot of responsibilities like supervising in the hall at lunch time, encouraging other students to play sports, to help out with many fundraising activities and to assist the P.E staff in any way I could. The most important part for me as sports captain was to ensure that the students were able to experience and enjoy every aspect of any sport which they wished to play.

I would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs.Johnstone, Mrs.Lawlor and Mr.Jennings, without them sports in the school would not be as brilliant as it is today. They have made my year as sports captain one I will always remember and I could not have done without there support and encouragement throughout the year. I would also like to thank our vice captain Michelle Finn and all the other sports committee members for their hard work this year.

When I first came to the Holy Child in 2003, I had no idea of the challenges that lay ahead of me. However, it is these challenges that have made me the person I am today.

I have enjoyed every minute of my six years here in the Holy Child and for that I feel obliged to thank our wonderful students, our inspiring staff and the rest of the 6th years who have made my time here so magical.  I would also like to thank Ms. O’Brien for her continued support throughout the year, and also Mr. McNamara and Ms. Morris for giving me this incredible opportunity.

I have many memories of my time Holy Child but unfortunately there are too many to write down here! The memories that stick out are hiking through Devil’s Glen with Mr. Walsh and Mr. Allen, the memorable school trip to Barcelona and the walk to Killiney Hill in Transition Year (which I’m sure Paul Weafer remembers most of all!) All of these memories will stay with me forever.

I would like to pay a special tribute to Mr. Lavery and Mrs. Harkin, who retired earlier in the year and I wish them both the best in the future, whatever they may do.There is no doubt that it is the staff who are the driving force behind the school. From all the teachers who support us  every day, to the wonderful ladies of the office, Margaret, Susan and Deirdre, to our brilliant caretakers Vinnie and Norbert and also to Gary, who sadly is no longer with us, and to our cleaning staff who keep the school in it’s immaculate condition all year round. I would like to thank you all for the help you have given over the last six years and also for your remarkable dedication to your students.

When I arrived here in 1st year, I always hoped that I would be selected for school captain, but it was still a welcome surprise when I was given this position. To everyone who has given me their support and help, once again thank you. This chapter of my life is now over, and I hope the next chapter is just as memorable as this has been.

As the old saying goes; “Wisdom is to live in the present, plan for the future and profit from the past.”
